Boy Oh Boy, Lesson Learned!
There's a ton of things you have to do in a successful business that are just plain boring.
And let's face it, we all just want to concentrate on the good stuff, right?
When it comes to your Internet business you get told time and time again to make sure you back everything up.
Well I do back stuff up….sometimes.
You know how you get signs now and again?
Little pointers that push you in a certain direction or give you a warning that something might happen?
Well, when BIG Mike of Incansoft told me about Backup Manager a nifty tool for, you guessed it, backing up your sites.
I thought to myself…
"Hmmm, its been a while since I did a backup, I better do one, think of all the stuff I could lose…"
And did I run to my PC and back everything up? No way, that would be too sensible.
Instead I played around with my sites idly.
Then I had the great idea to make a Camtasia video for this very blog.
I plugged in my headset and…
"CRACK!"
It sounded like a bolt of lightning followed by the familiar hum of a PC swiftly powering down.
I don't know whether it was some sort of short circuit or power surge, but one thing's for sure…my desktop PC = deceased.
It is a non-PC.
I lost a ton of website updates on XSitePro some of my copywriting work and some cash at the PC repair shop where the guy was at least able to salvage some of my work.
The lesson?
If you have an internet business, back-up like your life depends on it!

Hi, Matt. Glad you were able to recover without too much trouble. Sadly, the warning to back up data too often goes unheeded. No one ever thinks THEIR hard drive will die…until it does, and they find they've lost those irreplaceable family photos, email address books and countess records and downloads they can’t replace. Because my business is dependant on my computer, I’m meticulous about backing up to TWO external hard drives, because hard drives are cheap insurance—and they CAN die or be stolen.
And because I live in Florida, where homes and businesses occasionally get swept away by hurricanes, I also do a full backup to Mozy, a highly-secure, online storage service. It’s super simple to use. I downloaded Mozy’s software, set the parameters I wanted, and now any time my computer is idle for 20 minutes, Mozy backs up my data to their own servers, which are in turn backed up to multiple locations, just in case they loose a building. Mozy has a free service available for small backups. I pay $50 a year to back up nearly unlimited gigs of data. If the worst ever happens and fire, flood or hurricane destroy my office, I will still be able to recover all my data from any computer that can connect to Mozy.
Hey Bonnie, nice to hear from you (don't worry I haven't forgotten that favor I owe you!)
Mozy eh? Never heard of them, but you better believe I'm going to test them out! Thanks for the great tip
